"THE KRUGER BROTHERS ARE NOTHING SHORT OF MAGNIFICENT, the classiest of acts as can be found on today's bluegrass and acoustic scene. Their music defies description. Especially when one considers it's made by a trio. The Krugers' sound is both intense and tranquil, it's classic, classy and classical, and it's jazzy and grassy -- all at the same time and packed into one CD or one of the brothers' mesmerizing concerts." By Dan Tackett, Bluegrass Journal, April 1, 2008
"Jens is one of the best banjo players in the world," said Wade Shealy, who organized the concert for the Simpsonville Arts Foundation. "He can get sounds out of a banjo that you've never heard."
Landsberg described Kruger Brothers concerts as very spontaneous and tailored to each audience. "We never do a set list," Landsberg said. "We never know exactly what we're going to play until we're actually on stage. We have such a diverse and wide repertoire that we gear the show pretty much to the mood of the audience." By Nathaniel Cary, Greenville Tribune-Times, October 24, 2007
"... IT IS DIFFICULT TO ASSESS A PIECE OF MUSIC that has never been heard before and that includes so many elements, drawn from disparate traditions. There are passages that are clearly from a bluegrass tradition with a hard driving banjo rhythm and there are sweet melodic passages that take advantage of the large string section only an orchestra can offer. There are also movements that include vocals, songs, if you will, performed by Uwe Kruger. Some in the audience recognized these as signature Kruger Brothers' songs.
The piece is at its best in "Wilkes County Breakdown." Here the Kurger Brothers set off with a gentle melody that builds and builds in tempo until they are playing so fast you almost cannot hear the individual notes anymore. Then the orchestra enters and builds the tension higher with greater and greater volume until the whole things becomes one strong pounding rhythm that resolves in a very satisfying climax, which brought this audience to its feet, clapping, stomping and totally invigorated by the experience. ..." "Think about it," Maestro Xiao-Lu Li said. "The whole world would be better, more loving, if we had more Kruger Brothers." It's hard to argue with that." - Review by Ellen Hathaway, The Ellsworth American, June 7, 2007
"MUSIC FROM THE SPRING" ALTERNATES BETWEEN beautiful, relaxing and exciting, just like the season. It's funny and whimsical, and also bold and serious. It sometimes feels tender and somewhat spiritual." Bob Keyes, Staff Writer, Portland Press Herald, May 27, 2007
"EVERY ONCE IN A WHILE, A BANJO PLAYER comes along who challenges the boundaries of what you believe the instrument is capable of. Swiss-born Jens Kruger is just such a player. His music is neither bluegrass nor old-time, but dips into both, along with classical, country and his roots in European folk." -
"I USED TO THINK THE BANJO WAS SOMEWHAT LIMITED to certain styles, until I heard Jens Kruger. I love Jens's playing. I've always been really into the hardcore traditional banjo styles but Jens has played some of the most beautiful and expressive banjo I've ever heard." - Ron Block, member of Grammy-winning Alison Krauss and Union Station, in an interview with Petra Jones, Banjo Newsletter, May 2006
"SINCE HIS ELECTRIFYING INTRODUCTION to American audiences at Merlefest in 1997, the Swiss musician Jens Kruger has established himself as one of the world's most musically sophisticated and technically accomplished five-string banjo players." - Happy Traum, President - Homespun Tapes
